The Lost Battalion Tour

Tour Program:

We leave Landau at 06:00 and head for the Argonne forest

Get of the highway at Sainte-Menehould, visit the French Military cemetery and the monument for the 10th and 18th French Army Corps there and proceed to Binarville.

Tour Programm:
Die Fahrt beginnt ab Landau um 06:00 in richtung des Argonner Waldes.
Die französische Autobahn verlassen wir bei St. Menehould und besuchen den großen französischen Friedhof dort. Besichtigen das Monument des 10 und 18 Armekops und setzen dann die Fahrt in Richtung Binarville fort.

St. Menehould

At Binarville the German Army was stopped in 1914 and until the arrival of the Americans in 1918 nothing really important - beside the mine warfare with tons of explosives - happened in this sector.

The Germans had turned the hights of the Argonne forest into a bastion with large underground shelters, covered trenches and rows and rows of barbed wire.

Taking the old Roman Army road from Binarville to Varennes en Argonne we pass by the are of the Charlevaux mill where Major C. Whittlesey was trapped with his men.
We will have a stop there so you can explore the steep area.
If the weather is any good we will have a pick nick there.

After exploring the area we will then drive to Varennes en Argonne where we visit the Museum for the Battle of the Argonnes and the American Pennsylvania Monument errected in 1927.

From Varennes we will then drive up to the American Montfaucon Memorial for

a short visit before we continue to the American Military Cemetery Meuse-Argonne at Romagne sur Montfaucon.

From there we drive to Verdun with a short stop at the 79th Division Memorial

"Mont Americaine" to check in our Hotel

We will have dinner in one of the many Restaurants in Verdun

Binarville war der nicht unbedingt "Der Wendepunkt" der ersten Argonnenschlacht verdeutlicht allerdings den Haltepunkt 1914.

In der Zeit von 1914 bis zum Eintreffender Amerikaner 1918 fand bis auf den Minenkrieg nicht viel Spektakuläres statt. Auf beiden Seiten wurde geschanzt und von deutscher Seite her wurde der Argonnerwald in eine Festung mit Stacheldrath, unterirdischen Kavernen, Bunkern und endlosen Reihen Stacheldath verwandelt.
Artillerieduelle und Spähtrupps waren an der Tagesordnung.

Von Binarville fahren wir dann entlang der alten Römerstrasse, die nach Varennes führt.

Wir gelangen dann in das Tal der Charlevaux Mühle in der Major C. Whittlesey mit seinem Battalion abgeschnitten war.
Bei guten Wetter machen wir hier unser Picknick:
Nach kurzer Zeit stoppen wir noch bei dem dem deutschen Soldatenfriedhof in bei Apremont.

Danach fahren wir dann nach Varennes en Argonne wo wir das Museum der Schlacht, das amerikanische Monument besuchen.

Von Varennes fahren wir dann weiter nach Montfaucon, wo ein weiteres amerikanisches Ehrenmal and die dortige Schlacht erinnert.

von dort fahren wir dann zum größten amerikanischen Friedhof in Europa, dem US Meuse-Argonne Friedhof.

Auf dem weg nach Verdun - wo wir übernachten - stoppen wir noch kurz am "Mont Americaine" , dem Denkmal der 79 US Division.

Wake up call 06:30 / Breakfast 07:00 / Departure 07:30

Chose between a Verdun tour or a trip to the Montsec Federal Monument and the St. Mihil American Cemetery.

From there we return to Germany.
