Die Amerikaner 1944/45 The Americans |
|
1944 errichten amerikanische Truppen das obere Elsass und
besetzten Teile der Maginot Line.
Im Januar 1945 wurde die letzte größere Offensive von deutscher Seite
aus gestartet. die Operation Nordwind. Diese unnötige und
kriegsverlängernd wirkende Aktion brachte nochmals Leid und Tod in das
Elsass. Bis zum März 1945 wurde der deutsche Angriff bis zum
Westwall zurückgedrängt und US Truppen durchbrachen den Westwall vom
Süden aus.

In late 1944 the first American units advanced up the
Alsace (Gen. Patch
7th US Army) . During the Battle of the Bulge some units were given to
Gen. Pattons 3rdArmy and the lines were thinned out. On January 1st 1945
the Germans began their last stupid assault on Allied troops in Alsace.
OPERATION NORDWIND
The German units were understrength and not fuly equipped, so that after
some hard and costly battles that prolonged the war , theiy withdrew
behind the "Siegfried Line".
In March 1945 3rd and 7th Armies finally broke the Siegfried Line and
advanced to the Rhine.
